Your time to fish is probably limited. Don't waste that time finding the right water or trying to choose the right fly. A guide is your fast track to the frustration-free fishing experience that you've been hoping to find. And no matter how good you are now, you will walk away a better fisherman.

A tip is never required nor should a guide expect to always get a tip, but the truth is that tipping your guide is common and many guides do come to expect a tip.

Keep in mind that if you are fishing with an outfitter that makes you buy your flies and leaders for the day and the guide doesn't have to supply those items, then tipping less is appropriate.

Grand County Fishing Company doesn't have any hidden costs, the guide will supply you with leaders and flies. If you simply can't afford to tip on top of the guided trip, just remember that most guides do this for their love of fly fishing and they are just happy to share that with you tip or no tip.

I have always said that the best time to go fishing is when you can, but if you have your choice then the question becomes a little more complicated.

On Grey Reef for example, you want to fish from April through June. The first two weeks of July can still be good, but after that, the weed growth really becomes a problem. Not that you can't still catch fish, but most come to the net with an extra couple pounds of salad.

Come September the weeds start to die off and the fishing becomes enjoyable again. On the rivers around Winter Park, some of the best fishing occurs before runoff starts or immediately after the waters start to clear.

We have a Salmon fly hatch, Green Drake hatch, Blue Winged Olives and Pale Morning Duns, and don't ever come to our streams without your Caddis patterns.

As summer progresses, we catch a lot of nice fish on Hoppers, Ants, Beetles, Tricos and Caddis. My favorite time to fish around Grand County is the Fall with the changing leaves and crystal clear water.

Autumn is streamer time on the Colorado for some very impressive Browns just getting ready procreate. Then again, if streamers aren't your thing, the dry fly fishing can rival the spring for activity.

It is almost as if the fish sense the coming winter and want that one last feast before the midge season. Winter is midge fishing for me. Stoneflies also work during the colder months, but midges are generally the rule. We have water that stays open most of the season, so again the best time to go fishing is when you can.

My experience is that most children don't have the attention span for four or eight hours of fly fishing until the age of eleven. Depending on maturity level and patience, some do well much younger and some are still not ready at a much older age.

If your child is very focused and expresses a strong interest, then give it a try no matter his/her age on a half day wade trip and if he gets bored then be ready to cut the trip short.

If that goes well, then try a full day wade or float fishing trip. Just don't force a trip that may spoil fishing for your child. It is something that the two of you can share for a lifetime.
